Dave Schumacher, Director of NJYS Jazz Studies

David Schumacher has been a touring musician and educator for more than 30 years. He has played and recorded with world renowned jazz artists such as vibraphonist Lionel Hampton for 5 years, Harry Connick, Jr. as an original member of Connick’s orchestra for 19 years, T. S. Monk On Monk, Tom Harrell Octet and Big Band, Art Blakey Big Band,and Mel Tormé among other jazz greats.

Mr. Schumacher has impressed audiences in over 460 cities in 41 countries on the live stage and on countless major television broadcasts. In the 1990s, he was the co-leader/coarranger of Unit 17, a big band composed of some of New York’s finest jazz musicians. As a composer and leader, Mr.Schumacher has three CD’s to his credit.

 

Intro to Jazz Workshop
Grades 6-10 | Intermediate

Intro to Jazz Workshop
An excellent opportunity to learn melodic and rhythmic improvisation skills, harmonic and scalar materials and motivic development as well as become familiar with jazz forms, and learn outstanding tunes from jazz masters. This workshop is open to all instrumentalists (strings, winds, brass, percussion, piano and guitar) in grades 6 – 10 who can play their major scales and have a desire to learn how to play jazz!

Concerts: 2 each season plus community performances

Grades 9-12 | Advanced
Sundays 2:30-4:00 p.m.

Tuition: $1100

NJYS Jazz Combo
For the more seasoned jazz player, the combos will work on improvisation, repertoire building and ensemble skills while studying and performing classic jazz compositions and works from the American Songbook. Guest artists will coach and play with the students. Audition or consent from the instructor required.
